Fall Foliage. Christmas Fur. Can trees have fur?!
The fall and winter seasons are the perfect time to get outside and explore the different types of trees that decorate our landscapes. The trees in October and November have an amazing co lor that can amaze your eyes like a kaleidoscope. And when the leaves fall off of those trees in the winter, the trees that are left with all of their needles remind us that Christmastime is near! So, here are some fun facts about any kind of tree that you can see outside between now and next year:
The leaves of some trees always stay yellow, and never turn orange or red. These types of trees are common in eastern Pennsylvania, and include birch trees, hickory trees, redbud and tulip poplar trees.
Trees that will usually have red leaves include sugar maple, dogwood, sweet gum, black gum and sourwood trees.
Evergreen trees actually start to 'shed' their leaves in the spring instead of the fall. But, they never lose all of their leaves at one time. This is why they stay green all year long.
Brigh sunlight is necessary for leaves to turn red in the fall. If the weather is bad for an extended period of time (if it rains for several days in a row), a black 'mask' will appear on the leaf.
Frasier Firs are the most popular Christmas trees that are purchased at Christmas and used to decorate in homes. They have 1" needles that are silvery green and soft to the touch. They are also the tree most likely to grow in the perfect 'Christmas tree' shape.
Fir trees are often misspelled as 'fur' trees. Any trees with 'fir' in the title have soft needles, heavy branches with spaces in between that are ideal for decorating, and do not 'shed' the needles as quickly as pine trees. Trees do not have fur the way our pets have fur!
Pine trees often have sharp needles that are difficult to decorate, and so they are not as popular to purchase at Christmas time. They also lose their needles if they are not watered frequently, and do not thrive in a dry environment.
Thee branches from Eastern Pines are often used to make Christmas wreathes, since their branches bend easily and they usually have long, feathery needles.

Stay Safe at the Mall this holiday season!

We all know that Santa makes a list and checks it twice. But does YOUR family have the most important holiday checklist in order? Thats the Be Safe at the Mall Checklist, of course! The holidays are the busiest time of year in shopping centers, and we help make sure that all kids are safe at the mall by offering Keep Kids Safe I.D. wristbands at our Customer Service Center. Go through this checklist as a family before you venture to the mall this holiday season!
Review your familys contact information before leaving for the mall. Exchange cell phone numbers, if you are carrying phones with you. Make sure that parents or guardians and children are holding hands at ALL times while walking through the mall parking lot, or on sidewalks on the mall property. Use the 2 steps rule both inside and outside of the mall. Parents/guardians and children should never be more than 2 steps apart while walking through a busy area. Parents/guardians and children should never be separated due to a child staying in a vehicle, store or restroom unattended. Come up with a family plan of what to do if you become separated. Children should be taught to walk to the nearest cash register or safe stranger (a security guard) and tell the person at the desk that they are lost. Security will help ensure that parents/guardians and children are reunited.
