From our new summer newsletter: School has let out, the temperature outside has soared sky-high, and its that time of the year when kids tend to repeat the two words that moms and dads like to avoid hearing: Im bored! But lucky for all of us, there are plenty of things to do during the summer months that range in cost from free to frugal. So get away from the computer, put down that video game controller, and try these ideas on for size: Spend a day volunteering for a local organization that needs help. Have a pajama day, where you eat breakfast for lunch and spend the afternoon watching rented movies. Organize a board game day with other kids in the neighborhood, and arrange for fun and inexpensive prizes for the winners. Have a water balloon fight in your backyard. Take a field trip to somewhere that doesnt charge an admission fee, like a state park or local farm that welcomes visitors. Build a fort in the living room. Do a baking day with your babysitter. Have a picnic indoors or outdoors. The possibilities of things that you can do on a summer day are endless. You just need a little free time and a bit of imagination, and those summer days will be flying by before you know it!Fun Facts
July is...National Ice Cream Month!
Back in 1984, then-U.S. President Ronald Reagan officially declared July to be "National Ice Cream Month". Being a big fan of the creamy treat himself, Reagan recognized the popularity of ice cream as one of the nation's most popular snacks. He also designated July 19 to be "National Ice Cream Day". Sadly, not many people even realize that there is a holiday or a month designated to our love of ice cream. But now you know, which means that you can properly celebrate by having a cone and trying a new flavor during each day in July (go ahead, we know you're up to the task)!
We bet you also didn't know that there is an International Ice Cream Association (known to some as the International Dairy Foods Association). This association encourages retailers and consumers to celebrate ice cream all year long, though particularly during the month of July. This association also studies the sales trends of ice cream and actually lobbies the government to stop placing certain taxes and restrictions on smaller, mom-and-pop-owned ice cream vendors.
Ice cream is a booming business that generates $21 billion in sales annually. About 9% of the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers each year is used to produce ice cream. In other words, cows play a big role in making sure we get our vanilla, chocolate and butter pecan fix!
You can find your favorite ice cream treats at the following Lehigh Valley Mall locations: Cold Stone Creamery, Chick-Fil-A, and Friendly's. And if you're feeling adventurous enough to try making your own ice cream at home, visit Williams-Sonoma to pick up an ice cream maker, ice cream scoops, a waffle cone maker, and cone bowls!
American Adventures Month
Did you know that August is the only month in which no national holidays are observed? Therefore, August is unofficially "American Adventures" month, which celebrates vacationing in the United States.
Look at the map below and see if you can label all of most of the states. Pick your favorite color, and shade in the states that you have been on vacation to, or have visited.

Make Your Own Sock Puppets!4
Make the Incredible Edible Veggie Bowl!4
Make Your Own Sock Puppets!

Sadeckys Puppets visits Lehigh Valley Mall again in September, but you dont have to wait until then to have some fun with puppets on your own! You probably have the resources available in your own home to make sock puppets, which are the easiest puppets to make and can still be used in your own home puppet theater.
You'll need:
- Different sized adult and childrens-sized socks
- Craft or hot glue (if using hot glue, get an adults help)
- Fabric marker
- Odds and ends such as: felt material, buttons, googly eyes, beads, pipe cleaners, pom pom balls, glitter, packing peanuts, pillow stuffing, yarn, etc.
Kids, start by putting the sock on your hand (not the one you write with). Everyones hand is a different size, so you will want to mark the sock to ensure that any features you want to add are in a good place. You dont want a pair of eyes stuck half-way up your arm, or a nose on your wrist. Tuck the toe part inside between the thumb and four fingers, which will leave a mouth-like opening that you can control by opening and closing your hand. Use a marker to make small dots where you will want the facial features eyes, ears, nose, tongue, teeth, and whatever else your imagination conjures. Remove the sock from your hand and use the odds and ends so that you can begin to assemble the puppet. You may be able to get an adult to sew on buttons or to show you how to twist a pipe cleaner to make hair for your puppet. Just remember that no matter what you do with your puppet, you have fun and use your imagination to create an at-home puppet theater that will entertain the whole family!
Make the Incredible Edible Veggie Bowl!

Weve already mentioned that summer time is a time to eat healthy. Well, heres a healthy snack that were sure will win the approval of moms and dads everywhere. Its the incredible edible VEGGIE BOWL!
Ingredients:
- 1 green, red or yellow pepper, washed
- 1 bunch of celery, washed
- 1 carrot, washed & peeled
- 1 bunch broccoli or cauliflower flourets, washed
Utensils:
- Knife (you'll need help from an adult)
- Cutting board
Directions:
- 1.Cut the pepper in half (from side to side). Clean out the seeds and gunk from the inside. Now you have two pieces. One will be your pepper- shaped bowl.
- 2.Cut the other half of the pepper into skinny slices
- 3. Cut the carrot into skinny sticks about 4 long. Do the same with the celery and broccoli or cauliflower florets.
- 4. Put a little salad dressing in the bottom of your pepper bowl.
- 5. Put celery sticks, carrot sticks, pepper slices and broccoli or cauliflower into the pepper bowl.
- 6. Now youve got a portable veggie treat! You can pull out the veggies and eat them with a little dressing. Then when youre finished with the veggies, its time to eat the bowl!
